Seven Mainers have been chosen to fish for shrimp this winter after many thought the crustacean was gone from Maine waters.
All but one of them is from Maine’s Midcoast with the other from Portland.
Upwards of 40 fishermen applied.
The crew is getting their gear ready to start casting in February.
It’s been well over a decade since Maine fishermen were allowed to shrimp due to low population levels.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources says this sampling program will be their best shot of seeing what’s out there.
The seven shrimpers, at their own expense, will be allowed to catch up to 58,000 pounds.
